Environment variables

Environment variables override config files and are overridden by command-line flags. See precedence.

Credentials and endpoints

Variable	Config key	Flag	Purpose
`BRONTO_API_KEY`	none (never read from files)	`--api-key`	API key. When set, the keychain isn’t consulted.
`BRONTO_REGION`	`region`	`--region`	`eu` (default) or `us`. Must be a lowercase slug.
`BRONTO_BASE_URL`	`base_url`	`--base-url`	Full REST API base URL. Overrides the region-derived `https://api.<region>.bronto.io`.
`BRONTO_INGEST_URL`	`ingest_url`	`--ingest-url` on `bronto send`	Ingestion endpoint. Overrides `https://ingestion.<region>.bronto.io`.
`BRONTO_PROFILE`	`profile`	`--profile`	Named profile to use.
`BRONTO_CONFIG_DIR`			Parent directory of `bronto/config.toml`, the fallback credentials file, and REPL history. Defaults to the OS user config directory.

Variable	Config key	Flag	Purpose
`BRONTO_TIMEOUT`	`timeout`	`--timeout`	HTTP timeout in seconds (default 30).
`BRONTO_MAX_RETRIES`	`max_retries`	`--max-retries`	Retries for idempotent requests on 429, 502, 503, and 504 (default 2).

Used by bronto search --url and --open.

Variable	Config key	Purpose
`BRONTO_APP_URL`	`app_url`	Web app base URL. Defaults to the region’s web app.
`BRONTO_ORG_ID`	`org_id`	Organization id for links. Defaults to the active org reported by the API.

Variable	Config key	Purpose
`BRONTO_ASK_URL`	`ask_url`	OpenAI-compatible chat-completions URL.
`BRONTO_ASK_MODEL`	`ask_model`	Model name (default `gpt-4o-mini`).
`BRONTO_ASK_API_KEY`	none (env only)	Key for the ask endpoint, sent as a bearer token.

Variable	Purpose
`NO_COLOR`	Any non-empty value turns off color. `--no-color` does the same.
`FORCE_COLOR`	Any non-empty value forces color on, even when not writing to a terminal. `NO_COLOR` and `--no-color` win over it.
`TERM`	`TERM=dumb` turns off color unless `FORCE_COLOR` is set.

bronto reads the standard OpenTelemetry variables to trace its own runs. Tracing is off unless an exporter is configured. See Telemetry.

Variable	Purpose
`OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT`	Turns on OTLP trace export to this endpoint. `OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_TRACES_ENDPOINT` does the same.
`OTEL_TRACES_EXPORTER`	`otlp`, `console` (to stderr) or `none`.
`OTEL_SDK_DISABLED`	`true` turns tracing off.
`OTEL_SERVICE_NAME`	`service.name` (default `bronto-cli`).
`BRONTO_TELEMETRY_CAPTURE`	How much of the command line spans record: `default` (sanitized), `none` or `all` (raw, except API keys).
`TRACEPARENT`, `TRACESTATE`, `BAGGAGE`	Trace context to continue. Passed on to API requests and exec plugins.

These apply to scripts/install.sh only, not to the CLI:

Variable	Purpose
`VERSION`	Release tag to install, for example `v0.1.0`. Defaults to the latest release.
`BINDIR`	Install directory. Defaults to `/usr/local/bin`.
