By default the CLI talks to Bronto’s hosted regions: <region> is eu unless you set --region, BRONTO_REGION, or the region config key. The ingestion endpoints page on docs.bronto.io lists the regional hosts.

Staging or a local instance

To use any Bronto-compatible API, such as a staging environment or a local instance, override the hosts instead of the region:
A trailing slash on the base URL is fine. The base URL replaces the region-derived API host completely, and the ingestion URL does the same for bronto send. Set both if you send data. Flags beat environment variables, which beat config files, so a one-off --base-url always wins.

One profile per environment

To avoid exporting variables in every shell, store each environment in its own profile:
Then pick the environment per command, or per shell:
bronto auth login --base-url <url> checks the key against that host instead of trying the public regions. auth login also makes the profile you log into the default, so run bronto auth switch <name> afterwards if you want a different default.

Check where requests go

Add --debug to any command to see the full URL of each request on stderr.
base_url and ingest_url can only come from flags, environment variables, or your user config file, never from a project .bronto.toml. See Project files for why.

Containers, CI, and sandboxes

Environments without a keychain or a writable home directory need a few environment variables set instead. CI/CD covers them.
